Softening Gradient Plasticity: Analytical Study of Localization under Nonuniform Stress
نویسندگان
چکیده
Localization of plastic strain induced by softening can be objectively described by a regularized plasticity model that postulates a dependence of the current yield stress on a nonlocal softening variable defined by a differential (gradient) expression. This paper presents analytical solutions of the one-dimensional localization problem under certain special nonuniform stress distributions. The one-dimensional problem can be interpreted as describing either a tensile bar with variable cross section, or a beam subjected to a nonuniform bending moment. Explicit as well as implicit gradient formulations are considered. The evolution of the plastic strain profile and the shape of the load-displacement diagram are investigated. It is shown that even if the local constitutive law exhibits softening right from the onset of yielding, the global loaddisplacement diagram has a hardening part. The interplay between the internal length scales characterizing the material and the geometry is discussed.

Objective modeling of strain localization
ABSTRACT. This paper provides an elementary introduction into modeling of localized inelastic processes such as cracking or formation of shear bands. The basic concepts are explained using a simple one-dimensional example. It is shown that a stress-strain law with softening used in a standard continuum description leads to physically meaningless results and that the numerical solution suffers b...
متن کاملSpectral analysis of localization in nonlocal and over-nonlocal materials with softening plasticity or damage
The paper shows that spectral wave propagation analysis reveals in a simple and clear manner the effectiveness of various regularization techniques for softening materials, i.e., materials for which the yield limits soften as a function of the total strain. Both plasticity and damage models are considered. It is verified analytically in a simple way that the nonlocal integral-type model with de...
متن کاملExplicit mixed strain-displacement finite elements for compressible and quasi-incompressible elasticity and plasticity
This paper presents an explicit mixed finite element formulation to address compressible and quasi-incompressible problems in elasticity and plasticity. This implies that the numerical solution only involves diagonal systems of equations. The formulation uses independent and equal interpolation of displacements and strains, stabilized by variational subscales (VMS). A displacement sub-scale is ...
متن کاملFree Vibration Analysis of Nonuniform Microbeams Based on Modified Couple Stress Theory: an Analytical Solution
In this study, analytical solution is presented to calculate the free vibration frequencies of nonuniform microbeams. Scale effects are modelled using modified couple stress theory and the microbeam is assumed to be thin while Poisson's ratio effects are also taken into account. Nonuniformity is presented by exponentially varying width among the microbeam while the thickness remains constant. R...

This thesis consists of two parts. The first part explores a 2-d edge dislocation model to demonstrate characteristics of Field Dislocation Mechanics (FDM) in modeling single and collective behavior of individual dislocations. The second work explores the possibility of modelling adiabatic shear bands propagation within the timespace averaged framework of Mesoscopic Field Dislocation Mechanics ...
